Angola Penitentiary was original the Angola Plantation. It was named Angola since many of the enslaved people who worked on the plantation were from Angola Africa. In the sixties it was called the “bloodiest prison in the South.” It has grown to the size of Manhattan. It is the largest maximum security prison in the United States. The inmates are predominately black and the guards predominately white. It has its own rodeo. Despite warnings from public health experts and an ongoing lawsuit, Louisiana is imprisoning infected people at Angola’s Camp J, which had been closed due to a history of suicides and violence in the camp.
