Reimagining History
May 20 – June 25, 2023 at Arts Benicia, Benicia, California
Sandow Birk, Juror
I’m honored to have the The Archaeology of the Unicorn, from my House of Cards series selected for this exhibition. This image combines the monoclonius—a discredited dinosaur fossil at one time to be evidence of an actual unicorn; an image from the 1500s that shows a wild child of the woods with an unicorn (the wild-child legend predates the later legend of a virgin who attracts the elusive unicorn; an image from the famous Unicorn Tapestries; and the Narwal—a sea creature that many believe was inspired the unicorn myth.
The idea of reimagining history is not new in the world of art and literature. The works of artists such as Robert Colescott, Cindy Sherman, and Enrique Chagoya examine issues of race, gender, ethnicity, and political identity through their visual retelling of iconic images and historical figures. In literature, examples span from Herodotus’ The Histories in 440 BC to Tolstoy’s War and Peace to the contemporary Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Arts Benicia invited artists to submit artworks that reimagine and reconsider histories, be it of a personal nature or global scope.
