I Ching Series Update
This series is inspired by the I Ching, the 2000-year-old Chinese divination system. The I Ching became part of the fabric of Chinese philosophy. Each hexagram consists of a combination of six yin (broken) or yang (solid) lines and each combination of has a particular meaning. I’ve layered these hexagrams with imagery that illustrate my understanding of these meanings.
I started this exploration in 2016 and created images for all 64 hexagrams in 2019 when I had a show at the Tortuga Gallery. I have continued my visual exploration of the 64 hexagrams and have been working on a book that will display the 64 hexagrams paired with haiku. As part of this effort, I have been recreating and improving many of the hexagrams. Many thanks to poet Scott Wiggerman for teaching me about english-language haiku while editing my poetry. My goal is to have the book published by the end of 2025. To view the entire series click HERE.
Below is the latest hexagram painting and info about three October shows featuring the I Ching series.

Hexagram 54: The Marrying Maiden
This hexagram indicates an unequal partnership, as when (in traditional Chinese culture) a young maiden enters a marriage as a second wife to an older but prosperous man. This imbalance in a relationship is emphasized in the painting by making the man a skeleton as the imbalance can be unhealthy for both parties. However if you find yourself in an unequal partnership (of any kind) you can make it better by being aware of the power dynamics and taking steps to mitigate them.
This painting is currently available at The Next Best Thing To Being There, 1315 Mountain Road, Albuquerque. The shop is open on Wednesday-Sunday from Noon to 4pm.
