Description

New Mexico, fondly known as the Land of Enchantment, captivates visitors and residents with its rich cultural tapestry, breathtaking landscapes, and awe-inspiring skies. This nickname reflects the state’s undeniable charm, but many locals also affectionately dub it the “Land of Entrapment,” owing to its magnetic ability to anchor creative souls who find its allure irresistible.

However, beneath its natural beauty and cultural heritage lies a complex and sobering legacy. New Mexico is the birthplace of the nuclear bomb, with the first atomic test, the Trinity Test, conducted in its arid deserts. This event marked the beginning of an enduring relationship with the nuclear military industry. Over the decades, this industry has maintained a significant presence in the state, posing environmental and health risks to its people. In light of this, a new moniker I have dubbed it “The Land of Bombardment,” a stark reminder of this enduring impact.

For a deeper exploration of New Mexico’s nuclear history and its far-reaching consequences, visit NukeWatch New Mexico.  To experience a poetic reflection on these themes, consider Jules Nyquist’s powerful collection, Atomic Paradise, available on Amazon.
