Postcards to America Update

In the Postcard to America series, I juxtapose vintage-postcard-style images with real images taken from current events as well as history. Some people have objected to the word America since I am referring to the United States alone. However, this series started as my response to the “Make America Great Again” motto and so I have kept the misnomer. I am slowly but surely moving ahead with my plan to create a postcard for all 50 states (or city in each state) as well as Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

I recently completed the 18th “postcard”— Colorado: Rocky Mountain High. The inspiration for this artwork came as I drove back and forth from Albuquerque to Denver for an art show in March and I was struck at the number of cannabis stores littered along the various towns off of I-40. The growth of legal recreational cannabis stores in my home state of New Mexico mirrors this development. However, Colorado was one of the first two states to legalize marijuana in 2012 and is now the second state to legalize the use (not the sale) of psilocybin, the psychedelic substance in magic mushrooms.

I’ve also begun work on a Hawaii “postcard” inspired my friend Marjorie St. Clair’s escape from her retirement home in Lahaina with only her purse, the clothes on her back, and her car during the recent devastating fire in Maui. She is a creative writer who I’ve collaborated with on several book covers and layouts as well as her website, blog, and newsletters. Her website is WritersAdventure.com. Also, please check out her story and help her if you can by clicking HERE.
